HS2

The challenge

Ahead of the Government’s announcement about plans for stage 2 of the proposed new high-speed railway HS2, the people behind the plans wanted to understand the opinions of the general public and residents who lived along the line of route. HS2 engaged Populus to investigate awareness, level of information and opinions towards the proposals.

The solution

Populus conducted two sets of research: the first, an online poll of a nationally representative sample of 2,000 adults, probed attitudes of the general public. The second was a telephone interview of 2,000 residents within 10 miles of the planned route, a representative sample reflecting the balance of population in the surveyed area. This research ascertained respondents’ awareness of both stages of the proposed route, overall level of support and opposition, level of agreements with arguments for and against, as well as attention paid to the issue.

Populus produced a series of findings that outlined the opinions, concerns, and perceived benefits of the project, which HS2 continue to use to advise the development of their strategy.
