Learning a language is a New Year’s resolution for 1 in 5 of UK public in 2018

January is traditionally a time for new starts, and it is a time that will see many pledge to make changes with New Year’s resolutions.

Some might opt for fitness goals, and others might hatch grand travel plans, but the latest Populus research carried out on behalf of the British Council shows that around 1 in 5 of us (21%) will make learning a language a New Year’s resolution in 2018.

Previous Populus research for the British Council has shown that poor foreign language skills often leave UK holiday-makers lost in translation(2). According to the latest findings, Spanish is the most popular language among those surveyed, while around 1 in 3 say they intend to learn at least some key phrases in another language.

MPs have called for a national recovery programme to improve the UK’s language skills. The latest Populus research suggests that there is growing appetite among the UK public too, for developing their foreign language abilities.
