4 in 5 people suffer from financial nightmares

According to new Populus research commissioned by peer-to-peer lender Ratesetter, 80% of UK adults aged 18+ suffer from financial nightmares.

Finacial worry-02

In fact, over a third of people (39%) who have experienced financial fears say they have suffered from anxiety or stress, 16% have become physically ill and 7% have increasingly come to rely on alcohol. A fifth (17%) of 25-34 year olds even admitted that they have taken time off work due to financial stress.

Our survey also revealed the public’s 10 most common financial nightmares:

  1. An unexpected bill (31%)
  2. Being a victim of fraud (31%)
  3. House repairs (26%)
  4. Replacing broken white goods e.g. fridge, boiler (24%)
  5. Redundancy to either me or my partner (22%)
  6. Car or bike failing MOT (16%)
  7. Increase in housing rent (15%)
  8. An interest rate rise (e.g. on mortgage, credit card, overdraft etc.) (12%)
  9. Going unexpectedly overdrawn (9%)
  10. Stock market crash (9%)

Populus surveyed 2,101 UK adults online between 2-4 October 2015. Data were weighted to be demographically representative of all UK adults.  Populus is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
